Book One - The Promise

1. Pleasant Grove I

(1945, town of Pleasant Grove, servicemen returning from WWII)

COMMANDING OFFICER:

Private Barrett straighten up

(Doyle stands up)

COMMANDING OFFICER:

And all you others listen up
Your country thanks you to its core
Your service won the war

And now, at last, you’re going home
Next stop is the town of Pleasant Grove

TOWNSFOLK:

Everybody here they come!

Mother’s go and grab your sons!
It doesn’t happen every day

That heroes come into this place
But God brought our boys back home

And shed His Love on Pleasant Grove!

EVERYONE:

For God’s love is sure
For the just and the true
And Though Jesus did some things for us

It ain’t as much as we do!

SOLDIERS:

All the men are lining up

LADIES:

And all the girls are primping up

SOLDIERS and LADIES:

It almost happens every day
Another bride is whisked away

Right here in the land of Pleasant Grove
To settle down and build another home!

EVERYONE:

Where God’s love is sure
For the just and the true

And though Jesus did some things for us
It ain’t as much as we do!

For God’s love is sure
For the just and the true

Though Jesus did some things for us
It ain’t as much as we do!

(As the celebrations and dancing continue, Doyle and Marcella accidentally bump into each other)

(Doyle and Marcella’s eyes meet)

(They immediately come together to dance, lost in each other’s eyes)

(The celebrations are abruptly interupted by the Bishop - it's time to give thanks!)

EVERYONE:

Hush (hush, hush, hush)
Don’t say a word Hush

Hush (hush, hush, hush)
Don’t say a word

Hush (hush, hush, hush)
Don’t say a word

(Doyle and Marcella also fall in line and enter the church)

THE CHOIR:

So work and watch and fight and pray
with all your might and zeal

Push every worthy work along
With your shoulder to the wheel

BISHOP:

And should we die before we’re done?

CHOIR and CONGREGATION:

At least God knows the race we’ve run!

BISHOP:

But if you fall along the way?

CHOIR and CONGREGATION:

Perdition holds a special place!

(While all of this his happening, the tension between Doyle and Marcella builds)

(Their eyes meet from opposite sides of the church and the message is clear)

(They ditch the sermon and head for a grove of trees in the park)

(Doyle and Marcella share their first kiss)

(The celebration carries on without them as they remain entwined, now unaware of any of it)

EVERYONE:

God’s love is sure
For the just and the true
And Jesus did some things for us
It ain’t as much as we do!

2. This Is Forever

DOYLE:

Marcella my heart
Was like ice, cold as a stone,
but that all went away
with you

Your smile, so safe and warm,
turns skies from gray
into blue

What I’m trying to say
to you today in this moment with words
are words that won’t do… what I want them to do
So these clumsy, stumbling sounds
will just have to do

MARCELLA:

Doyle my eyes,
Couldn’t see like a blindness from birth

But that all went away...with you
The clouds were cold and grey
but through the rain, I saw you

What I’m trying to say to you

today in this moment no words
are needed to prove

what I already knew
Your love for me
and mine for you

(Doyle takes odd jobs around town trying to save up money)

(With his meager remaining money, Doyle heads to the jewelry store but can only afford the smallest ring in the shop)

DOYLE:

The time has come

The time is now oh how I feel for you
Like the air
your bird glides through
And makes one from two

(Scene changes to their wedding day, where, surrounded by friends, family, and the congregation, they celebrate together)

BISHOP:

Dearly beloved

We’re gathered here today
As sisters and brothers
And witnesses to say

By the power of God

BISHOP, DOYLE, MARCELLA, CHOIR and CONGREGATION:

This is forever!

BISHOP:

To have and to hold

BISHOP, DOYLE, MARCELLA, CHOIR and CONGREGATION:

Eternally!

BISHOP:

And this goes

BISHOP, DOYLE, MARCELLA, CHOIR and CONGREGATION:

On and on and on and on and on
forever and ever!

BISHOP, DOYLE, MARCELLA:

Sealed to the
Father and the Son
and the Spirit are
you and me

DOYLE, MARCELLA:

Sealed to the Father
and the Son
and the Spirit are
you and me

(After the celebrations, the newlyweds return to their small home on Maple Lane)

3. The Promise

(Ominous Russian radio sounds set the tone of the times. Doyle and Marcella are beginning their life together in the earliest stages of the Cold War, when McCarthyism, and the ‘Red Scare’ are in full  swing, driving a pervasive fear)

(A star falls from the sky, landing on the Barrett’s home, symbolizing the arrival of their first born son, Alden)

(Night turns to day In PG town square and the church members start filing into the church)
(Doyle and Marcella leave their home with a baby in Marcella’s arms)

BISHOP, CHOIR and CONGREGATION:

Ohh Ohh… Ohh… Ohh…

(Doyle and Marcella enter the church and take their place at the front on this special day)

BISHOP:

A long time ago
somewhere far away

God made the soul
destined to be born into this
baby you see here today
But you know we ain’t Calvinists!
And this child’s fate is far from sealed

It all depends on if you raise him well
and he chooses to follow God’s will
oh oh Doyle

(The bishop calls Doyle to come forward and bless his baby)

Bless this boy
into the church
and name your child

And pray God’s hands
will hold him tight
and away from guile!

And do you swear by God today?

DOYLE and MARCELLA:

Yes we do! Yes we do!

BISHOP:

That you will do your best to mold this clay?

DOYLE and MARCELLA:

Yes we will! Yes we will!

BISHOP:

Then by the power in me
I seal you for eternity

Together with each other there to stay
by his side
For the rest of all time

(Scene transitions back to the Barrett home as night falls)

MARCELLA:

A long time ago
somewhere far away

God knew this soul
was perfect our home

and so He blessed us and sent him our way
He doesn’t know we’re so new at this

But no family could be more thrilled!

And we will do our best to
raise you well and we just
know that you’ll follow God’s will

ohh Doyle, look at our boy!
he’s so small in size!

DOYLE and MARCELLA:

Got these tiny hands
Gripping us tight with his beautiful eyes!

MARCELLA:

I wish I almost didn’t know
That he will have to some day leave our home

If it was all up to me
He’d never even know of the tree

Together he would stay here safe and warm
by my side…
for the rest of his life

(The song ends as Senator McCarthy is ranting on the tv)

(The ‘Red Scare’ of the 50’s is in full sway)

4. Maple Lane:

Fast forward 15 years. Introducing Alden Barrett. He’s young and full of hope. He begins the process of telling us about himself in his journal as if it’s a story we’re sure to hear about someday. Also, introducing others in the family and key neighbors on Maple Lane.

ALDEN:

Hello world
it’s just me
and I wanted to tell you a story

I think I’ll write it down
I’ll write it down

It’s a magical world
across the sea
where the hero gets the girl and the glory
and wins the crown

he wins the crown!
I’ll write that down!

And maybe some day
someone will write a book
about me

And tell the whole world
how I did all kinds of
un-believable things

I know it’s crazy
It sounds crazy!
Maybe?
But I’m gonna write it down!

MARCELLA, ALDEN, SIBLINGS (SCOTTY, JESS, DEB):

Oooohhh!!! Oooohhh!!! Aaaahhh!!!

ALDEN:

I wonder where I’ll go

I wonder who I’ll see
I wonder who I’ll grow up to be

MARCELLA, ALDEN, SIBLINGS:

Oooohhh!!! Oooohhh!!! Aaaahhh!!!

ALDEN:

I wonder what I’ll do
I wonder what I’ll be

I’ll probably end up
either president or a king

No, that's too much!

But either way
I’m going to do some
un-believable thing

Cause when I hit the stage
you’ll all know my name
I will…

MARCELLA:

Alden dear!
are you here?

Come on down
Daddy’s home
and it’s time for supper

Come on down
Come on down and help me out

DOYLE:

Honey I’m home!
What’s on the stove?
I missed you so!
Now kids mind your mother!

DOYLE:

Come on down
Come on down
Gather ‘round

Dear lord, bless our home
and keep us far from pain

and bless all our friends and neighbors
here on Maple Lane

Cause they’re like family
Just like family

This we pray in Jesus’ name

ALL THE NEIGHBORS ON MAPLE LANE:

Cookies jam and homemade bread

right here on Maple Lane

FAITH:

You've been on my mind

MARCELLA:

Oh you're so kind!

HOPE:

No the pleasure is all mine

FAITH, HOPE, and CHARITY’S HUSBANDS, DOYLE:

Fixing cars and mending sheds

right here on Maple Lane

ALDEN:

I wonder what I’ll do
I wonder what I’ll be

CONSTANCE CAGE:

I couldn’t help but notice
and don’t want to say anything mean
But Doyle and Marcella’s boy

CONSTANCE CAGE, PRUDENCE PETTY, and VERITY SHAME:

you know he acts so curiously

PRUDENCE PETTY:

Of course we’re all family

CONSTANCE CAGE:

We’re like family

VERITY SHAME:

We’re all family

PRUDENCE, CONSTANCE, and VERITY:

Family here on Maple Lane

BISHOP:

Doyle and Marcella! My favorite home! (to come and see)

MARCELLA:

Bishop please! You’re embarrassing me!

BISHOP:

And Alden here is like a son of my own!

MARCELLA:

Oh these things you’re saying are just amazing!

BISHOP, MARCELLA, DOYLE:

You’ve (we’ve) trained up that child [we’ve tried to] in the way he should go

BISHOP:

and when he’s older

MARCELLA & DOYLE:

(so much older)

BISHOP:

The outcome we already Know!

ALDEN:

I’m on my way…ay-hey

(Alden runs off on an adventure to climb up the mountain near their home)

It’s like destiny is calling my name
Beyond the rising tides

(Alden reaches the “G” which overlooks the valley and his home from the foothills above, and races on towards the mountain summit)

like a king to a faithful knight
It’s my time

I’ve got one chance to try
To get it right

I’ll get it right
Help me stay in the light

And I will try  with all my might
Lord I’ll try with all my might
So help me

(Next scene, Alden, still in prayer but now back in his bedroom as his parents look on from the doorway)

DOYLE and MARCELLA:

Dear God,
hold him tight

And treat him right

And when he stumbles Lord
please get him through the night

cause what would we do
if we were to ever to lose him

ALDEN:

Hello world!
It’s just me

and I wanted to tell you a story
I think I’ll write it down
I’ll write it down
I’ll write it down

5. Khrushchev Built A Bomb

(Lights up on Pleasant Grove High School)

(It’s time for “Duck and Cover” nuclear attack drills)

MR. MEANS:

Khrushchev’s built a bomb!

And now it’s pointed straight at you

And you don’t know just what he’ll do!
He’s got the bomb!

A big bomb! A big bomb!

(Mr Means message hits Alden differently. For him this  is literal…and terrifying)

And Iron Curtains don’t fall!
You think he’s
gonna treat us any different
than those stupid krouts?

He built a wall!
A big wall! A big wall!

You better get in line

and pray God don’t rain down His fire!

And then there’s Mao Zedong!

And there ain’t nothing he won’t do
to kill and torture me and you!
He’d starve his mom!

His own mom! his own mom!

But now you’ve got the gall?
To try to throw it in our face?
And jeopardize the human race?

We’ve seen it all!

What’s that I hear?!
This one isn’t a drill!
The bomb’s almost here!

And this time, yes, this time
it’s real!

(Blaring air raid siren goes off!)

(The Russians might as well have launched a nuclear bomb heading right for PGHS)

PRINCIPLE FEER:

(screaming over the intercom)

Run for your lives!
Duck and hide!
Get to the shelter
and stay inside!

Run for your lives!
Duck and hide!
Get to the shelter
and stay inside!

(The entire school stampedes towards the fallout shelter)

This isn’t a drill!
This time it’s always real!
You never can be certain but
this time is more than a drill!

(The “fallout shelter” is really just the gymnasium with the lights turned down)

MRS BRUNT:

Shut up!!!

Stand up! Sit down!
Line up side by side!

When we say you better jump
you better say “how high”?!

STUDENTS, ALDEN:

Stand up! Sit down!
Side by side!
You say to jump and we say how high!

MRS. BRUNT:

You’re much too young to remember Bay of Pigs
when that Commie Kennedy nearly got us all killed!
He didn’t

STUDENTS, ALDEN:

Stand up! Sit down!
Side by side!
You say to jump and we say how high!

MRS. BRUNT:

And Mao Ze Dong thinks the time is now his
and of course we’ll be the first to be
annihilated!
Unless we

STUDENTS, ALDEN:

Stand up! Sit down!
Side by side!
You say to jump and we say how high!

MR. MEANS, MRS. BRUNT, TEACHERS, and PRINCIPLE FEER:

You better get in line and
pray that God don’t rain down His fire!

(Alden over internalizes all of it. This feels very real to him.)

MRS. BRUNT:

Now Senator McCarthy tried to warn us of this
but those liberals out in Hollywood
poisoned him!
You better…

STUDENTS, ALDEN:

Stand up! Sit down!
Side by side!
You say to jump and we say how high!

(Mrs. Brunt notices Alden isn’t singing and goes after him)

MRS. BRUNT:

Now you got the gall to scoff at communists
but you never fought a war like
the rest of us did!
You didn’t

(Alden’s external behavior shows nothing of what’s going on in his mind)

STUDENTS, ALDEN:

Stand up! Sit down!
Side by side!
You say to jump and we say how high!

MR. MEANS, MRS. BRUNT, TEACHERS, and PRINCIPLE FEER:

You better get in line and
pray that God don’t rain down His fire!

(The lights come back on and the windows open to reveal that it was all just a drill and all is well)

MRS. BRUNT:

This was only a drill
This was only a drill!
You never can be certain!
Next time it could be real!
This was just a drill!

6. The Girl Who Changed Everything:

(As the kids return to their classes,
Alden is abruptly interrupted by the first glance of Teresa.
His entire demeanor changes in an instant)

ALDEN:

I can't believe my eyes

I'm fixated, mesmerized

Who is this girl?
She’s just changed my life

One glance, but it’s not too soon
To picture this bride and her groom
This love at first sight is destined to prove
that the...

...stars and the sun and the moon have aligned

Dear God let this fairytale ending be mine
so that

(Alden is convinced this girl is his destiny just like he dreamed it up in his journal)

after all the wars are won
And history is done
The world will still speak of this
moment that changed every thing

(Back to reality and she’s not even looking at him)

But I'm so nervous I can't even breathe

(Alden follows her around in a daze trying to get her to notice him)

But she still hasn't looked my way
How cruel is this game she plays?

We've had our first fight
and I don't know her name

But I do know that the
stars and the sun and the moon have aligned

Dear God let this fairytale ending be mine (“Just this once!”)

so that after all the wars are won
And history is done

The world will still speak of this
moment that changed every-thing

Cause it’s changed everything in me

(Teresa accidentally bumps into Alden and knocks his books to the ground)

She touched me!
Yeah, she looked my way!

(Alden is transported into a fantasy where he is a rock star on the big stage!)

She bumped into me!
Yeah, as if to say

Come touch me!
And look my way!
Bump into me!
And tell me your name!

The music in his head stops and he is snapped back to reality)

7. The Revolutionaries

Like a ticking time bomb, the stoners/hippies of PGHS roar onto the scene in a total rejection of the previous generation’s oppression and values. Shockingly, they aren’t afraid. Alden is not a part of this group yet. But he is intrigued by their objection to the status quo.

(A group of unruly teens pull up and order food at Pleasant Grove's local burger joint)

(The stoner teenagers peel out, headed towards the school)

(All three wear U.S. issued military jackets but they look nothing like enlistees)

(The leader’s jacket has the name “CAGE” on it)

(They screach to a halt in front of the school, jump out, and burst in through the front doors)

DAVEY CAGE:

We ain’t taking prisoners!
We’ve come to claim what’s rightfully ours!

(Mrs. Brunt is immediately alerted to the scene)

You know we’ve heard this all before
And we ain’t hearing anymore!

(Davey Cage yanks the bullhorn out of Mrs. Brunt’s hands)

THE REVOLUTIONARIES:

So whatcha gonna do
about it now? Huh?

I said whatcha gonna do
about that now? Whatcha gonna do
about it now? Huh?

WHATCHA GONNA DO?!!!

(The teenagers go wild!)

DAVEY:

Crooners died with Peggy Sue and newsflash for you: crew cuts too!

You sweaty, fat, and squealing sows, I’d like to see you stop us now!

THE REVOLUTIONARIES:

So whatcha gonna do
about it now? Huh?
I said whatcha gonna do
about that now? Whatcha gonna do
about it now? Huh?

Whatcha gonna do?

(This is exactly what Chief Justus and his small town sidekicks, Sergeant Steele and Officer Smalls have been waiting for!)

(The cops arrive and enter in full force)

(Davey thanks the teachers for their time)

(The Revolutionaries escape out the back of the school)

(But what to do about the cops following them?)

THE REVOLUTIONARIES:

So whatcha gonna do
about it now? Huh?
Whatcha gonna do
about it now?
Whatcha gonna do
about it now? Huh?
Whatcha gonna do?

(The flat tires prevent the cops from following)

(Chief Justus’ eyes narrow in on his new ‘Public Enemy #1)

(Scene changes to show a homeless man, sleeping on the curb with a cardboard sign asking for help)

(A car approaches)

(The car waits for a moment as someone gets out and then gets back in before leaving)

(Some Good Samaritan has left a meal for the man)

8. She Doesn’t Know I Exist

Alden is in “love” (infatuated) with Teresa but there's no chance. She’s not interested. Every day he waits around in places he knows she’ll be and still there’s nothing.

ALDEN:

Day after day alone in the halls
She passes my way
but doesn’t see me at all
It’s like I’m not here
and she is so near

Night after night
I wake up dreaming we’ve kissed

and yet try as I might
she doesn’t know I exist
when I am right here
And she is just as near

I mean, come on you’ve gotta be kidding me!

I mean, how could she say she truly doesn’t see?
All my looks from afar

all the glances I’ve left

The cries of my heart

or the pain in my chest

(As Teresa enters the bus, Alden quickly removes his books from the seat beside him to make room for her)

These dreams that I have
that one day she’ll see

And come take my hand
and show...me that she loves me

(But Teresa goes right past him to sit with her friend behind him)

But right now she can’t see

(Scene change with Alden back at home moments later writing a poem in his journal)

ALDEN:

Roses are red, violets are blue
It can’t be all in my head it’s just got to be true

(Marcella interrupts Alden’s day dream/love poem)

MARCELLA:

What’s this I’m hearing?

Is this about a girl?!
Come tell me everything!

(ALDEN: Mom, no!)

MARCELLA:

Ahh, so it is true

you’ve got something to say

I can tell in your eyes, something happened today

Does she like you too?!

(ALDEN: mom!)

Oh, is that too soon?
Oh, come on you know you can tell me, anything

(ALDEN: Maybe not anything)

So what’s her name, and what’s she been saying?

(ALDEN: Well, that’s the thing)

ALDEN:

All my looks from afar
all the glances I've left

MARCELLA:

Ahh, this pain in your heart
is cause she can't see you yet
But as soon as she can
Then of course it will be...

ALDEN:

And she'll come take my hand

and show ...me that she loves me

but right now she can't see

Someday you’ll come take my hand
And show...me that you love me

(Again, Alden is back in school and it’s painfully clear that Teresa is not in his life at all)

Though right now you can’t see

9. Portrait Of A Child I

Triggered by Teresa’s total indifference to him, Alden is beginning to acknowledge a pattern he’s seen before while approaching emotions that bring him pain. At first he tries to combat these suffocating feelings with memories of the good things he can recall. But ultimately, it’s just too much for him and he’s completely overwhelmed by the “fog” and anxiety flooding his own mind. He doesn’t realize it, but this is a full blown panic attack coming on and he is about to get steamrolled by it.

NOTE: Many of the lyrics for this song are taken from a poem Alden wrote in his journal by the same name.

(Alden finds himself alone at the school and he needs to get home)

(The path he must take becomes dark and ominous)

(A dark fog now rolls in in the distance)

VOICES IN ALDEN'S HEAD:

Oohh… Oohh… Oohh… Oohh…

ALDEN:

Clouds up ahead
Indicating rain
A fog in my head
I can’t explain

Gotta write down all the good things I still feel
Cause sometimes I forget they’re real

Take out a pen and a pad and put them down
Cause who knows the next time they’ll come ‘round?

(Writing about happy times doesn’t work this time - this “episode” is getting worse)

Not me not me

There are clouds up ahead

That indicate rain

There’s a fog in my head
That I just can’t explain

What’s happening to me?!!!

ALDEN:

Everytime I get excited
there’s a feeling in my bones
like I’m running with the bulls
and I’m falling behind!

And no one can see

(The chasing bulls catch up and toss him around like a rag doll)

ALDEN:

How the hooves take me
down to the ground
flipped round like a rag doll

you can’t hear a rag doll cry!

(Alden transforms into a rag doll - a coping mechanism that stops the feeling, and the pain)

Until the small smile

once visible in my eyes

becomes displaced

even erased...

And I’m no longer a child

VOICES IN HIS HEAD:

Oohh… Oohh… Oohh… Oohh…

(with journal in hand, the rag doll runs for home, but the bulls return)

(and they’re no longer bulls, but all the people Alden fears)

(In Alden’s mind, there is no escape)

ALDEN:

What’s happening to me?!!!

ANGELIC VOICE:

Ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh…

(As a rag doll, Alden feels powerless yet unharmed as they do with him whatever they want)

(Eventually the bulls drag the rag doll into the town square)

(He knows he will never make it home this way)

(Suddenly the bulls drop the rag doll and leave him alone)

(Alden regains enough composure and begins frantically fighting off all of the figures)

(Alden pushes everyone back and it’s just him and the rag doll now)

(Alden carefully picks up the rag doll and heads towards his home)

(By the time Alden reaches home the rag doll has gone and he is holding only his journal)

ALDEN:

Clouds up ahead
Indicating rain
A fog in my head
That I can’t explain

(Alden places his journal on a table as he walks through the family room)

(As the music fades, Alden’s siblings can be heard playing in the background with the journal still on the table)

10. The Dream is Over I

(As Alden tries to collect himself in private)

ALDEN:

I’m gonna write down all these good things that I feel

(His siblings and their friends find his journal)

Cause nothing to me could be more real

SIBLINGS (SCOTTY, JESS, DEB) w/ NEIGHBOR FRIENDS:

(mockingly reading back Alden’s journal)

ALDEN:

There are clouds up ahead and they indicate rain
There’s fog in my head that I just can’t explain

(Alden peeks out and sees everyone reading his journal and freaks out)

ALDEN:

Ahhhhh!

(The family picture is knocked askew as the door flies open with a smash!)

ALDEN:

Give it back you cruel bastards!

I’ll kill you all, I swear to God!

I’ll break you necks when you are fast asleep

And I won’t even miss you when you’re dead and gone!

DOYLE:

Don’t you dare profane in my house!

Or with your mother, take that tone!

If you think you’re such a big shot now then
Good luck out there on your own!

(Alden runs out the house and into the street only to nearly get hit by Davey Cage’s car screeching to a halt)

(Davey and Alden’s eyes lock)

(Davey recognizes the desperation and sees Doyle coming)

(Davey motions for Alden to jump in the car)

(The Revolutionaries head to their hideout in the foothills overlooking the town of Pleasant Grove)

(Their newest member finds comfort and acceptance)

(Transition back to to Barrett’s home, where Doyle and Marcella are pacing the floor)

(The mood has changed dramatically from the night of the fight)

MARCELLA:

It’s been three days now
I’m getting worried how
He hasn’t called or shown his face

He’s been seen by no one
Perhaps we should call someone
And let them know he’s run away

(Doyle dials the police)

(CHIEF JUSTUS is delighted to get this call)

CHIEF JUSTUS and PGPD:

You little shit, you’d better run
‘cause you will never hear us come!
We are the law! We run this town!

We’ll lock you up and dress you down!

You ought to know, this ain’t for show
when you’re a common criminal
we’ll cut your teeth
and crack your skull!

We’ll break your heart

and crush your soul!

CHIEF JUSTUS:

Come on boys we’ve got a big one
on the loose out running ‘round!
We’ll have no hippies, whores, or junkies

trying to overthrow our town!
Why back in my day scum like this
was never heard to make a sound

because the people valued justice

and we brought the hammer down!

PGPD:

We are the law!

(The cops marching in their kick-boots like a mini version of the Third Reich)

We are the law!

We are the law!
We are the law!

(The Bishop joins in, warning the parents against Satan’s battle for the souls of their children)

BISHOP:

Come all you parents gather ‘round
for there are rumors that abound

of many towns across the land
where Satan’s staging his last stand

against our youth and most will fall
so few can fight the piper’s call
I’m sad to say for us today

BISHOP (w/ CONSTANCE, PRUDENCE, & VERITY):

these rumors ain’t so far away!

BISHOP:

Why even now within our homes

the devil pedals off his sleaze

and parents come to me in tears
but it’s too late to hear their pleas

when they themselves mis-mold their clay

and help to usher in the dawn
of nothing less than armageddon

with our youth as Satan’s pawns!

CONSTANCE CAGE, PRUDENCE, VERITY, CONGREGATION MEMBERS:

Satan’s pawns!
Satan’s pawns!

Satan’s pawns!
Satan’s pawns!

CHIEF JUSTUS:

(We are the law!)

BISHOP:

You can’t break God’s laws

The sermon is hijacked by the "mob” into an all-out book and rock-n-roll record burning)

without feeling the wrath of it all!

(Meanwhile in another part of town, the cops have cornered Alden after an apparently foiled beer heist)

(They draw their weapons on him)

(Alden’s time on the run has come to an end)

(Or has it?)

(It’s his fellow Revolutionary, Kem Lewis)

(The cops follow)

(Someone pulls them into an alley)

(It’s Johnny Lundgren)

(He points to an escape route through the alley)

(There’s an opening at the end of the alley way)

(They burst out of the alley and find themselves outside the book/record burning party)

(They stare on, shocked at what they are seeing,
but they’re soon noticed and they duck into the alley with a little help from Seamus)

(The Revolutionaries are long gone)

(Davey pulls up in the getaway car)

(Alden is last to leap in)

(But he’s knocked back by a massive cop)

At the same time this is happening, Marcella, at home, is desperately praying for her son to be safely returned)

MARCELLA:

Dear God, forgive him
And please bear with him

(Alden raises to his knees gasping for breath)

lest he should fall along the way

(Marcella doubles down)

It’s not his shouting

Or even his pouting

(Davey and the Revolutionaries are forced to flee)

That makes me fear he’s lost his way

DOYLE:

Behold our boy…

(Alden is transformed into a rag doll to cope again)

he grew in size

(Back home Doyle takes the crooked family picture off the wall)

(He shares it with Marcella)

He’s got his own two ears now

DOYLE & MARCELLA:

He’s got his own two eyes

MARCELLA:

Yes, but to me
he’s still just my child!

(The doorbell rings)

(Alden is delivered home by the cops in cuffs and badly beaten)
